Overview of the Role:
The IT Tech Ops Software Delivery team builds mission-critical software applications used by maintenance control, line maintenance and engineering teams to support aircraft safety, reliability and operational performance.
Reporting to the Manager of IT Tech Ops Software Delivery, the Junior Software Developer – Tech Ops Software Delivery supports the development, enhancement and maintenance of custom software solutions for WestJet’s Technical Operations organization.
This role works as part of a development team to deliver high-quality software while building technical skills across backend and frontend systems. The Junior Developer contributes to assigned work, follows established development practices and continues to grow their understanding of systems, tools and processes.
Success in this role requires a strong willingness to learn, attention to detail, collaboration within the team and the ability to deliver well-tested, reliable code under guidance.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
- Software Development – Develop and maintain application features based on defined requirements and guidance from senior team members.
- Bug Fixing & Support – Investigate and resolve defects, assist with troubleshooting and support production issues as needed.
- Code Quality & Standards – Follow coding standards and participate in peer code reviews to improve code quality and consistency.
- Process Adherence – Follow established development processes, including documentation, testing practices and version control standards.
- Team Collaboration – Work closely with developers and QA within the team to complete assigned tasks and deliver features.
- Testing Support – Assist in validating functionality through basic testing and support QA during testing cycles.
- Technical Documentation – Contribute to basic documentation of features, changes and technical implementations.
- Agile Participation – Participate in sprint ceremonies such as daily stand-ups, planning and retrospectives.
- Learning & Growth – Continuously build technical skills, learn new tools and technologies and apply feedback to improve performance.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Up to 5 years of experience in software development, supported by a degree in Computer Science or equivalent technical background.
- Basic experience with C and .NET or similar backend technologies.
- Exposure to JavaScript/TypeScript and modern frontend frameworks (e.g., Vue.js) is an asset.
- Foundational understanding of APIs and web services.
- Basic knowledge of databases and data access concepts.
- Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., GitHub).
- Exposure to Agile development environments and tools such as Jira or Azure DevOps is an asset.
- Strong willingness to learn and grow technical skills.
- Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to follow direction and work effectively within a team environment.
- Exposure to cloud platforms (e.g., Azure) or CI/CD pipelines is an asset.
